Course on Heritage Impact Assessments

Description: 
Impact assessments have been used as a tool by other sectors for evaluating various effects and consequences, and the time has come to adapt it for the heritage field. In order to meet the demands of the Committee and taking into account the growing need for professionals to have the knowledge and skills to carry out Heritage Impact Assessments, WHITRAP and ICCROM propose are organizing a training workshop in China.

Course objectives
·       To provide participants with knowledge on management requirements for World Heritage sites;
·       To discuss reporting and monitoring requirements, including State of Conservation reports and their implications to State Parties;
·       To provide the current knowledge and skills for using an impact assessment as a tool for evaluating various factors affecting heritage in general, and World Heritage sites in particular;
·       To provide understanding of the knowledge (such as the legal frameworks) for initiating/improving Heritage Impact Assessments in the respective countries of participants;
·       To promote the exchange of experiences and information among participants and institutions.

Methodology
  • The course is an intensive programme combining both theory and practice, through lectures, case studies and practical exercises. High level interaction is encouraged in the course with participants playing an important part.

500 – 750 word report which includes descriptions of the property and an indication of potential development/tourism/infrastructure activities that in your view could threaten the values/OUV of the site.  Alternatively, you can present a 500-750 word report on your experience of conducting/participating in an impact assessment study.
