The Icomos/Slovenia and the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage
of Slovenia are organizing the 2nd International Symposium on cultural
heritage and legal issues under the title “Protection and Reuse of Industrial
Heritage: Dilemmas, problems, examples”, which will take place in Bled from
the 1st to the 3rd October 2015.
Having in mind that industrial heritage is at risk, particularly in the area of
South Eastern Europe, and taking into account the relevance of Parliamentary
Assembly of the Council of Europe Resolution 1924 (2013) on industrial
heritage in Europe and the 10th anniversary of the Faro Convention on the
Value of Cultural Heritage for Society, the aim of the symposium is to promote
increased awareness about the values of industrial heritage in contemporary
society and to present challenges, dilemmas and examples related to the
protection of industrial heritage. The focus of the symposium is protection of
industrial heritage in the context of its rehabilitation and reuse.
In spite of the fact that the importance of industrial heritage is widely
recognized across Europe, in practice this type of heritage remains to a large
degree neglected in countries of Southern and above all Eastern Europe.
The goal of the symposium is to present dilemmas, problems and examples
concerning the rehabilitation and reuse of industrial heritage in the context of
contemporary sustainable development.
Invited speakers
Leading experts will be invited to deliver keynote lectures.
Presentation
Working language: the official language of the symposium (for both oral and
written contributions) will be English.

Collège doctoral Patrimoine dans le pourtour méditerranéen

L'Agence universitaire de la Francophonie lance un appel à candidatures pour intégrer le Collège doctoral inter-régional Patrimoine dans le pourtour méditerranéen qu'elle met en place dans les régions Maghreb et Europe centrale et orientale.

"De la Méditerranée, communément baignés de ses eaux et pétris de sa grande et riche histoire, les pays du Maghreb et de l’Europe centrale et orientale participent d’un même substrat encore vivace à travers des pratiques culturelles bien partagées sur les deux rives. Cependant, disposant aussi de marqueurs culturels propres, ces mêmes pays constituent également des entités patrimoniales autonomes dont les témoins se conjuguent au matériel par d’importants vestiges de sites et monuments historiques et, à l’immatériel par de remarquables pratiques et savoirs-faire traditionnels.
Monté à partir de ce constat d’épaisseur patrimoniale sur le pourtour de la Méditerranée, le présent collège doctoral a pour ambition principale de contribuer à sa mise en relief et d’en souligner les particularités. Toutefois, misant sur la teneur et la qualité des cycles éducatifs assurés dans les universités des pays d’origine, il comportera moins de formation massive en patrimoine qu’il ne s’intéressera à la méthodologie de la recherche et qu’il ne visera l’étude et l’approfondissement de certaines questions jugées d’actualité et/ou/ en rapport avec la gestion, la conservation, l’inventaire et la mise en valeur du patrimoine dans les différents pays du pourtour de la Méditerranée".

Le dispositif « Collèges doctoraux » contribue au développement des espaces régionaux de formation par et à la recherche dans des domaines prioritaires. Il entend également promouvoir la coopération scientifique et accroître la visibilité de la recherche francophone. Cet espace de perfectionnement pour des doctorants leur apporte un encadrement scientifique de haut niveau. Il y est dispensé une formation à la fois disciplinaire et transversale, complémentaire aux programmes de leur établissement d'origine (école ou formation doctorale).

Les candidats doivent être des doctorants inscrits en deuxième et troisième année à la rentrée universitaire 2014-2015 dans un établissement membre de l'AUF relevant des Bureaux suivants :

- Bureau Maghreb
- Bureau Europe centrale et orientale.

L'appel à candidatures a pour objet la sélection d'une cohorte de doctorants qui bénéficieront de cet accompagnement sur une période de 3 ans.

Prix UQAM-Respatrimoni en études patrimoniales 2014 – Appel à candidature

Le Réseau des chercheurs sur les patrimonialisations (Respatrimoni), en partenariat avec la Chaire de recherche du Canada en patrimoine urbain de l’Université du Québec à Montréal, le Forum canadien de recherche publique sur le patrimoine et les Presses Universitaires de Rennes, a créé un prix qui consiste à offrir la publication de sa thèse à un jeune docteur.


Le manuscrit portera sur l’étude du patrimoine et doit être issu d’une thèse rédigée en français, soutenue trois ans au maximum avant la date limite de candidature.


Règlement

Article 1. Le prix, dénommé « Prix Uqam-Respatrimoni en études patrimoniales », consiste à offrir à un jeune docteur la publication d’un manuscrit issu de sa thèse et rédigé en français, portant sur l’étude du patrimoine, aux Presses Universitaire de Rennes, dans la collection « Art et Société ».

Article 2. Le prix est financé grâce au soutien de la Chaire de recherche du Canada en patrimoine urbain de l’Université du Québec à Montréal et le Forum canadien de recherche publique sur le patrimoine.

Article 3. Le prix est décerné tous les deux ans, au mois de novembre. Le premier millésime est 2012.

Article 4. Le prix est décerné par un jury de 5 personnalités scientifiques des études patrimoniales, deux nommées par la Chaire de recherche du Canada en patrimoine de l’Uqam, deux nommées par le réseau  Respatrimoni -Réseau des Chercheurs sur les Patrimonialisations, représenté par le bureau de l’association de recherche sur les patrimonialisations, et une nommée conjointement. Le jury est nommé pour deux éditions du prix. Après discussion, le jury vote l’attribution du prix par un scrutin à 2 tours et à la majorité des voix.

Article 5. La thèse doit avoir été soutenue au maximum trois ans avant la date limite de soumission, dans l’une des disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales ou des humanités.

Article 6. Pour proposer leur candidature, les concurrents devront fournir un dossier sous forme électronique rassemblant les éléments suivants, en format PDF :

-         une lettre de motivation,
-         un CV,
-         un article ou un chapitre de livre déjà publié,
-         le synopsis du livre envisagé,
-         deux lettres de soutien de personnalités scientifiques,
-         la thèse soutenue,
-         le rapport de soutenance.

Article 7. La date limite de soumission des candidatures est fixée au 15 juillet de l’année millésime du prix.

Article 8. Le résultat de la sélection est annoncé en novembre de l’année millésime du prix.

The economic valuation of cultural heritage—whether protected and developed or illegally looted and exported—is among the most pressing practical research questions in the fields of both Cultural Heritage Studies and Community Development. What price in dollars or social value does heritage have in the 21st century? How is heritage marketed and sold in an era of rampant globalization and neoliberalism?

On the one hand, nations, regions, cities, and even small towns are investing significant public funds in the development and public presentation of archaeological sites, historic monuments, and historic districts in the hope of economic revitalization through tourism or increased property values. On the other, unprecedented diplomatic and legal measures are being taken to repatriate looted cultural property and put an end to the enormously profitable antiquities trade. What is happening on the ground? What types of heritage are being marketed, returned, or sold, and for what purposes? Who stands to gain from these processes?

Major Themes and Suggested Topics

The goal of this conference is to bring together a wide range of academics, economists, heritage professionals, development experts, government officials, and community leaders to examine the economic impacts of cultural heritage and its implications for contemporary society. Yet rather than seeing heritage-based tourism, urban redevelopment, and antiquities looting as distinct economic instances involving monetary profits or losses, we hope to encourage a trans-disciplinary discussion of the overlapping economic entanglements of cultural heritage and the broader social implications.

Themes to be explored in this conference will include:

• Tourism: How has the need to market cultural heritage shaped communities, landscapes, and historic centers? Do common methods for drawing tourists (seeking UNESCO World Heritage status, creating destinations, building new museums, etc.) actually increase tourism? What kinds of social or economic costs does tourism give rise to, and who or what bears the burden of these costs?
• Urban Revitalization: How does the promise of heritage tourism revenues lead to new ways of marketing or packaging the city? What types of (mega)projects does heritage tourism give rise to? Does it lead to ‘economic revitalization’? Who ultimately profits? And what impacts does it have on the fabric of the city?
• Archaeological Looting, the Antiquities Market, and its Costs: What does looting tell us about the needs of the communities who live on and near archaeological sites? What is the larger socio-economic context of looting in the global antiquities market? Who benefits from the movement of archaeological material from field to lab to museum?

Specific topics under these themes may include:

• The role of heritage in economic development
• Negotiating the relationship between outsiders and stakeholders in economic development projects
• Assessing the value of intangible cultural heritage
• The complexities of repatriating museum artifacts
• The impacts of tourism on historic sites and landscapes
• Changes brought about through the revitalization of urban centers
• The Disneyification of heritage sites: the balancing of profit, entertainment, and education
• The unique challenges of heritage management in developing countries
• The issues surrounding archaeological looting and/or the antiquities market

Abstract submission has been extended to February 15, 2013. Selected papers will be published in Heritage & Society, a peer-reviewed journal, whose editorship has been assumed by the UMass Amherst Center for Heritage and Society.

Based on an international essay competition, we will invite approximately 30 candidates to discuss their research, concerns and agendas with peers and prominent scholars in Berlin. The competition is open to students and scholars (post doctoral candidates must have completed a Ph.D. within the previous 5 years), journalists and practitioners interested in museum and tourism issues (e.g. curators, travel guides). 

The Irmgard Coninx Foundation will cover travel to and accommodation in Berlin.

Material Culture Review (MCR) solicits articles for a special issue: UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The deadline for abstracts is May 31, 2013.

UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, initiated in 2003, defines intangible cultural heritage (ICH) as “the practices, representations, expressions, as well as the knowledge and skills, that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage.” Intangible cultural heritage can also be defined more simply as “living traditions.” Increasingly, members of the museum and academic community throughout the world  are playing a significant role in the study,  preservation, and sustainability of intangible cultural heritage. Accordingly, MCR will be publishing a special issue on intangible cultural heritage. We welcome submissions from the following areas:

* How does intangible cultural heritage play a role in sustainable economic development?

* What role does intangible cultural heritage play in identity formation in communities, regions, and countries?

* What role does intangible cultural heritage play in safeguarding and sustaining the environment?

* Policy implications surrounding intangible cultural heritage in countries that have signed the Convention and nations that have not signed the Convention

* Intangible cultural heritage and education

* Intangible cultural heritage and sustainable tourism

Other intangible cultural heritage topical areas are also welcome.

MCR a peer-reviewed journal published twice a year under the auspices of Cape Breton University Press. MCR publishes original articles, research reports and notes, and critical reviews of books, exhibitions, and historic sites in English and French. The editors encourage submissions from graduate students and scholars at any phase of their professional career, professionals, and historians from the art and museum world, and from independent scholars with an interest in material culture.

The academic journal ARCHITECTURE MEDIA POLITICS SOCIETY is calling for articles for forthcoming editions in 2013. Its themes revolve around the relationship of architecture and the built environment with questions of the politics, media and society. Multidisciplinary papers are welcomed as particularly pertinent to the journal’s diverse perspective.

Areas of interest include (but are not restricted to): architecture, urbanism, regeneration, heritage, cultural and political identity, socio-cultural symbolism, mediated representation and environments.

Historical papers should seek to draw contemporary issues into their debates. Papers about US and UK architecture and its relationship with the politics of those two countries are particularly welcome.

The SIEF 2013 Congress proposes to examine the stakes and implications of circulation. Circulation and its semantic siblings – flow, exchange and mobility – are the buzzwords around which interdisciplinary conversations across the humanities and social sciences are organized at the present moment, superseding the previous decade’s buzzword globalization, which in turn superseded postmodernity, which superseded nationalism and ethnicity – eventually taking us back to the concepts around which our fields were constituted, including transmission and diffusion. In fact, ethnologists and folklorists as well as cultural anthropologists have been thinking and writing about circulation, flow, exchange, travel, and mobility for a century and half.


Paper proposal should be submitted to one of the accepted panels. Proposals should consist of a paper title, a (very) short abstract of less than 300 characters, and an abstract of 250 words. The proposal may also state the audio-visual requirements you have for your presentation.

Appel à communication pour un colloque européen organisé par l’association Génériques

Le patrimoine de l’immigration en France et en Europe : enjeu social et culture

Paris, 10-11 décembre 2012

Longtemps inscrite dans une invisibilité liée à une certaine conception d’une immigration dite « de travail » dans laquelle était occultée la dimension humaine, culturelle, sociale, affective … des immigrés, l’immigration en France a, depuis quelques années, acquis une certaine reconnaissance historique et patrimoniale.

L’idée que le patrimoine national comporte aussi des éléments liés aux apports culturels et identitaires de populations venues d’ailleurs paraît aujourd’hui acquise, même si les questions liées à sa préservation, sa valorisation et son appropriation collective demeurent ouvertes.

Pourtant, là où le patrimoine paraît, de prime abord, raconter une histoire collective immuable et revêtir l’identité stable de ce qui se transmet, l’immigration paraît d’emblée marquée par le mouvement, la fluidité, la complexité. Dès lors, l’émergence d’un patrimoine de l’immigration conduit à s’interroger tant sur le concept de patrimoine que sur la définition et le périmètre retenu pour parler des migrations.

Qu’est ce qui se transmet dans l’immigration ? Qu’est-ce qui se transmet de l’immigration ? Comment émerge la conscience de l’existence de ce patrimoine ? De quelle nature sont les lieux de la transmission : familiaux ? éducatifs ? Est-ce de cette transmission que naît le patrimoine ? Ou alors la patrimonialisation relève aussi de l’action d’autres acteurs, d’autres enjeux autour de la transmission de ces héritages ? Mais alors comment, par qui et surtout, pourquoi et pour qui, puisqu’aussi bien l’histoire de l’immigration ne saurait être écrite pour (et par) les seuls descendants d’immigrés ? Est-ce parce que le patrimoine de l’immigration peut être facteur d’intégration dynamique et de cohésion sociale ?

Quelle histoire le patrimoine de l’immigration raconte-t-il ? Ou à l’inverse, quelle histoire se raconte (et se légitime) à travers lui ? De quelle manière, pour qui et pourquoi ? Quel rapport la mémoire, qui, depuis les années 1980, a investi le champ historique et l’espace public, a-t-elle avec le patrimoine, et quel rapport celui-ci entretient-il avec la mémoire et l’histoire ?

La patrimonialisation de l’immigration, comme tout processus patrimonial, est le résultat de la conjugaison d’efforts de plusieurs acteurs, tant privés que publics. Animée par une volonté militante, les associations d’immigrés sont les premières, au début des années 1980,  à poser la problématique du patrimoine de l’immigration. En effet, à travers leur volonté de transmettre la mémoire et la culture du pays d’origine aux jeunes générations et de modifier l’image de l’immigré dans les représentations collectives, elles sont les premières à œuvrer à la prise de conscience d’un patrimoine de l’immigration.  Par la suite, d’autres acteurs (individuels, culturels, universitaires...), au travers du prisme du patrimoine, tenteront de changer l’image des immigrés et en feront ressortir l’ancrage dans la société française. Dans le contexte français, les acteurs publics jouent un rôle particulièrement important.

L’intérêt, depuis une trentaine d’années, pour ce patrimoine est important à plusieurs titres. En premier lieu parce qu’en mettant en avant les apports culturels et identitaires venant d’ailleurs, le patrimoine de l’immigration interroge notre lien à la culture, notre représentation de ce qui « fait » culture et la manière dont la culture se représente comme patrimoine. Aussi, parce qu’il permet de repenser le fondement historique et mémoriel de la nation en y intégrant la place et le rôle qu’y ont tenu les immigrés.

Acteur important du processus de sauvetage de la mémoire de l’immigration et d’écriture de son histoire depuis sa création en 1987, à la croisée des milieux universitaires, institutionnels, associatifs et culturels, l’association Génériques organise un colloque à dimension européenne sur le thème du patrimoine de l’immigration.

Ce colloque a pour objectif non seulement de développer la connaissance sur le patrimoine de l’immigration mais aussi d’interroger et de croiser les pratiques de ceux et celles qui y travaillent au niveau local, national, transnational et européen (associations, pouvoirs publics, acteurs culturels, institutions patrimoniales, chercheurs...).

Les communications organisées autour de tables rondes présenteront des pistes de réflexion, d’analyse ainsi que des expériences de terrain afin de contribuer à définir l’état des recherches sur les enjeux du patrimoine de l’immigration et sur la place de l’immigration dans les politiques de patrimonialisation en France et en Europe.

Parmi les thèmes envisagés :

• Comment et par qui se constitue et se transmet le patrimoine de l’immigration ?
• Le patrimoine de l’immigration : enjeu d’intégration sociale et/ou enjeu culturel ?
• Patrimoine de l’immigration et mémoire des lieux : quelle fonction pour les itinéraires culturels?
• L’apport des nouvelles technologies dans la sauvegarde et la diffusion du patrimoine de l’immigration

Call for papers: les processus migratoires en Méditerranée

Appel à communication pour un colloque international

Le programme transversal MIMED (Lieux et territoires des migrations en Méditerranée, XIXe-XXIe siècle) de la Maison méditerranéenne des Sciences de l’Homme d’Aix-en-Provence organise du 10 au 12 avril 2013 à Marseille un colloque international et interdisciplinaire sur la question des temporalités dans les processus migratoires en Méditerranée du XIXe au XXIe siècle.

Les propositions de communication devront mettre l’accent sur l’analyse des temporalités dans l’espace méditerranéen pour une période s’étendant du XIXe siècle au XXIe siècle. Elles pourront prioritairement porter sur les aspects suivants :

- les migrations temporaires

- les circulations de migrants

- les aspects transnationaux des migrations

- les arrivées, notamment à travers la question du transit et/ou de l’intégration

- le retour : comme réalité ou comme projet

- les représentations sociales des migrants et des courants migratoires

- les générations de migrants

- la mémoire des migrations ou des communautés migrantes

- la question du contrôle migratoire et des frontières

The Berkeley Essay Competition for Architects

The Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for Design Excellence Essay Competition

Each year, the PRIZE Committee selects a topic critical to the discussion of the social art of architecture and poses a Question based on that topic. Full-time undergraduate students enrolled in any architecture degree program or majoring in architecture throughout the world (or teams of two students, one of whom may be from a collateral discipline) are invited to submit a 500-word Essay proposal responding to the Question. This year the topic is: The Architect and the Accessible City.


The Committee poses a Question on this website related to the topic. Students enrolled in any accredited undergraduate architecture program or diploma in architecture program throughout the world are invited to submit a 500-word essay proposal in English responding to the Question (see eligibility requirements).  Undergraduate architecture students may team up with undergraduates from allied arts and social sciences programs.  

From the pool of essay proposals received, approximately 25 are selected by the PRIZE Committee as particularly promising. The 25 selected individual students, or student teams, become Semifinalists.

These Semifinalists are invited to submit a 2,500-word essay, again in English, expanding on their proposals. A group of readers, composed of Committee members and invited colleagues, selects five-to-eight of the best essays and sends these Finalist essays to a jury of international academics and architects to select the winners.

At the conclusion of the Essay Competition submittals, all Semifinalists are also invited to submit for one of two BERKELEY PRIZE Fellowships: the Travel Fellowship, or the Architectural Design Fellowship. Solidarité et citoyenneté, force et limites de l’engagement bénévole

L'objectif de cet ouvrage est de proposer au grand public ainsi qu'aux structures patrimoniales les grands enjeux de la préservation du patrimoine culturel universel et de l'engagement citoyen. Ethno Logique diffusera et exploitera cet ouvrage comme un outil pédagogique, encourageant les citoyens à s’impliquer de manière volontaire et constructive à travers des actions bénévoles. Ethno Logique remercie d’ores et déjà les participants à ce projet, qui feront de ce recueil un document de réflexion essentiel.
